Introduction

Oh my goodness! All of a sudden everything is dark, you can't see your schoolwork. You can't hear your teacher when she is talking to you. You can't smell lunch cooking in the lunchroom. You can't taste the yummy snack your friend brought. You can't feel your pencil when it is in your hand. What has happened??

Task

You will work in a group to become an expert about one of the 5 senses. Your group will use Kid Pix to draw pictures about what you have learned. Then your group will put your pictures into a Kid Pix slide show that you will share with the rest of the class.

Process

Day 1:

Go to the pink tub by Mrs. Howe's desk. Close your eyes and pull out one math tool.
Now find anyone else with that color math tool to be in your group.
Find the computer that matches your color.
Peak underneath the color card to see what "Sense Expert" you will become.

Day 2:

Meet with your group. The teachers will tell you what your jobs are for today.
The Pick-Up Person will get the 5 Senses CD from the teacher.
The Computer Operator will put the CD in the computer.
The Computer Operator will click on the sense that your group will be the expert on. The group will learn about the sense.
In your group, talk about what you have learned about your sense.
The Clean Up crew will take the CD out of the computer by dragging it to the trash.
The Delivery Person will take the CD back to the teacher.

Day 3:

Click on the movie about your sense and learn all you can about how we use that sense.
Talk to your group about a plan for your Kid Pix slide show.

Day 4:

Meet with your group and talk about what your picture will teach the group about your sense. Tell the teacher how everyone's picture will be different.
Draw the pictures that will show your friends what an expert you are on that sense.
Let a teacher know when you are finished with your pictures so she can help you translate your story.

Day 5:

If you need to, finish your Kid Pix pictures.
Check with the other people in your group to make sure everyone is finished and that you are all experts.
When everyone is done, tell a teacher.

Day 6:

Presentation Day

Each group will teach the class about their sense. Your group will share the slide show that you made.

Day 7:

Today is the day you prove that you are an expert on all five senses. Double click on the blue eye on the desktop. This is your sorting game. Which sense would you use? Click on a picture at the bottom. Drag it to the nose, the eye, the mouth, the ear, or the hand.

Day 8:

Today we will use a CD and something called a "SmartBoard" to play a game about our senses.

Conclusion:

Scientists wonder about the world around them. When you had questions about your senses, you investigated, recorded what you learned, and shared with others your findings. You are now an expert on the senses. Now if someone can't hear their teachers talking, smell lunch cooking, see their schoolwork, taste their lunch, or feel their pencil, you can share you expertise with them. You can explain why things happen the way they do. Scientists never stop wondering about why things are the way they are. Maybe this webquest will help you ask new questions.
